As Trump Applauded Approvingly, Rand Paul Urged Media To 'Print' Whistleblower Name

Voters in four states will cast ballots Tuesday in elections that Democrats and Republicans will use as a snapshot of the national mood amid impeachment proceedings in Washington and a crowded Democratic presidential primary.

Donald Trump praised Republican Senator Rand Paul during a campaign rally in Kentucky on Monday after the lawmaker insisted that the media name the whistleblower in the Ukraine scandal, with the United States president calling the proposal "excellent".

As he so often does, Trump turned the rally meant for a fellow Republican into a venue to air his own grievances against a litany of familiar foes, including the news media and the House Democrats who voted last week to open an impeachment inquiry into the president's push for Ukraine to investigate one of his political foes, former Vice President Joe Biden. Beshear is Kentucky's attorney general.

Trump's speech to thousands of supporters was an explicit attempt to make the governor's election in Kentucky a referendum on his presidency as he tries to survive an impeachment probe in the Democratic-led U.S. House of Representatives.

In New Jersey, Democrats are looking to maintain their legislative supermajorities and ward off any concerns that Trump and Republicans could widen their reach into Democratic-controlled areas.

Some voters Tuesday tied their decisions to the national atmosphere, particularly the president. But thanks to the widely dispersed white majority, which overwhelmingly votes Republican, it's all but impossible for a Democrat to win a statewide election.

Jennings, retired after a career in journalism and state government, said he believes Trump is unfit for office and threatens to undermine the foundation of American democracy.

Almost every state in the union is set to vote on Tuesday.

President Trump himself also called numerous time for the whistleblower to testify publicly.

"Tomorrow, Kentucky has a chance to send the radical Democrats a message", Trump said. And I trust the guy.

Indeed, Kentucky and MS are expected to be closer than the states' usual partisan leanings would suggest, though that has as much to do with local dynamics as with any national trends.

He joked that Bevin was "such a pain" when it came to calling him for things on behalf of the state of Kentucky.

Last month, Bevin called the impeachment inquiry an "absolute travesty" and challenged Beshear to state his position on what the Republican described as a "fundamental question" for Kentucky voters.

Ahead of the rally, Trump tweeted, "Matt has been a GREAT Governor".

He said that Democrats were working to impeach him because they were anxious about him winning re-election in 2020. And the powerful senator would quell some of those hopes with a Bevin victory.
