Long lines for Otto Warmbier farewell

Kenneth Bae, the U.S. citizen detained by North Korea for two years, says he believes it is possible the late Otto Warmbier could have been tortured during his captivity in the communist country.

Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the Republican chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, said the USA should think about banning us citizens from visiting North Korea.

For most, his casket was the first they had seen of Otto since he went to North Korea - very bad confirmation of the shocking, surreal set of circumstances that had played out since early a year ago.

But as the family finalized funeral arrangements Tuesday, the 22-year-old's death remains shrouded in mystery. Arizona U.S. Sen. John McCain said hours after Warmbier died on Monday that Warmbier was "murdered by the Kim Jong Un regime".

North Korea said last month it was its sovereign right to "ruthlessly punish" USA citizens it had detained for crimes against the state.

North Korean officials told us envoys that Warmbier contracted botulism after his trial and lapsed into a coma after taking a sleeping pill.

Blue and white ribbons, the colors of the high school, were still tied to trees in the city of about 8,000 to show of support for Warmbier's family after Otto's recent return. "China welcomes and encourages all thoughts and proposals that are conducive to easing tensions and confrontation, enhancing mutual trust, and solving the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue fundamentally", Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said yesterday.

Warmbier's family declined to have an autopsy performed on him, the Hamilton County Coroner's Office in OH said Tuesday, deciding that only an "external examination" would be performed.

The thousands of funeral goers formed two lines as Mr Warmbier's coffin was carried into Wyoming High School for the 45-minute service, and then along the three-mile route to the cemetery.

'I personally have found some peace in knowing that he was finally able to come home to be with his family who loved him so fiercely, to be back where he belonged before he passed, ' she said. But the Pentagon stopped short of saying the North Koreans are planning an imminent test, which would be its sixth. Warmbier was seized in January 2016, and is believed to have suffered the brain damage that left him in an unresponsive state soon after being sentenced that March.

"It's a total disgrace what happened to Otto", Trump said during an event in the Oval Office.

His doctors at UC hospital have rejected North Korea's claim he contracted botulism.

But later in the day, they said the family objected to an autopsy being performed on his body, so just an external exam was done.

Following Warmbier's death, the tour group that arranged his trip said it would no longer take Americans into the isolated country.

Asked whether Bae thinks Warmbier was physically mistreated given the threats he received in captivity, Bae said it is possible the college student was "threatened" or that he was "physically tortured or attacked".

"This goes beyond any kind of understanding of law and order", Mattis said.
