House Majority Whip Steve Scalise continues to improve after being shot in the hip during a congressional baseball practice last Wednesday, CBS News reports.
However, after multiple surgeries, Scalise showed signs of improvement, and by Saturday, his condition was upgraded from critical to serious.
When Scalise arrived at MedStar Washington Hospital after the shooting, the doctor who treated him said Scalise was in shock from blood loss and was on the brink of death.
Scalise and other congressional Republicans were practicing for their annual charity baseball game against Democrats when a gunman started shooting. "The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers", the hospital wrote, "on behalf of the Scalise family".

"[Scalise] will require additional operations to manage abdominal injuries and other broken bones". Predicting the length of that hospital stay will be much easier after a few more days have passed. "He is now listed in fair condition and is beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation", the hospital said in a statement Wednesday. The Capitol Police officers were present because Scalise is a member of the congressional leadership.
Barth was shot in the leg and has already been released from the hospital.
