The NCAA says the school must determine which games ineligible players participated in.
Pitino then said he would put his faith in the appeals committee and that U of L will win the process because it's what is "right and just". "And none of us do not feel extreme remorse, regret in everything that - what went on inside that dormitory".
On Thursday, Jurich said the NCAA's penalties were more severe than he imagined. But this is over the top.
No, quite frankly, what's inconceivable and unbelievable is Pitino's defense that he really didn't know the sex parties were happening. The team won't be barred from any future NCAA Tournaments, however.
"The penalty far exceeded our expectation", said Chuck Smrt, a UofL consultant and former NCAA investigator.
It bears repeating: The NCAA never has vacated a championship in its billion-dollar basketball tournament. "Therefore, he did not meet his responsibility to ensure violations were not occurring", the report stated. Former graduate assistant Brandon Williams was given a one-year show cause penalty.
The NCAA announced Thursday coach Rick Pitino will receive a five-game ACC suspension for his role in the scandal. A 10-year show-cause penalty would follow McGee if he returned to a coaching position in the NCAA.
How much value the NCAA placed on that is unclear but Pitino, unlike Boeheim, was charged only with a failure to monitor the program and not a failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance.
Pitino, who has repeatedly denied any knowledge of former assistant Andre McGee's interactions with Powell, wasn't done.
Senate GOP health bill would overhaul Obama law
Meanwhile, protesters railed against the Senate healthcare bill during a sit-in outside of Mr McConnell's office on Capitol Hill. Mr McConnell has only a thin margin of error: The bill would fail if just three of the Senate's 52 GOP senators oppose it .
What happens upon appeal is yet to be determined, but if all the penalties stand in most of their entirety, these alleged infractions by Pitino and a former member of his staff could end up costing the school millions of dollars in revenue and the distinction of a national title.
The committee held a almost 11-hour hearing with Louisville officials in April, a meeting Pitino later described as "one of the most hard days". Both Pitino and Louisville again vowed at that time to fight the charge that Pitino failed to monitor McGee when the coach and school officials met with the Committee on Infractions earlier this spring.
"No one who was interviewed during the investigation provided any information showing that the head coach was aware of the stripteases and prostitution".
At least seven, and potentially 10, of the prospective students allegedly were minors.
The NCAA's release included statements by the panel on its decision, saying: "The types of activities that occurred in this case were repugnant and threaten the integrity of the NCAA Collegiate Model, regardless". "We were overly aggressive in penalties we gave ourself and wanted to make sure we took this very seriously and responsibly. Today, however, the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions went beyond what we consider to be fair and reasonable".
The accompanying chart, courtesy of ESPN Stats & Information, shows nine of the most notable NCAA championships vacated.
The punishments have been doled out, but the Cardinals might have more coming their way.
"I thought we did everything above and beyond when we found out about this incident. I think my biggest disappointment is with the (NCAA) itself". It will argue that since the violations involved extra benefits, a player's ineligible status is a finite number of games, not an entire season. And it no longer matters whether you committed - or even knew about - said crime.
