After Giro crash, Thomas back to support Froome in Tour

Spaniard Mikel Landa, who was also involved in the crash at the Giro but recovered to finish 17th, is also in the squad.

The British duo of Stannard and Kennaugh were both in the Sky team in the traditional Tour warm-up race, the Critérium du Dauphiné, this month but have been overlooked in the final selection.

Ian Stannard and Luke Rowe have helped to keep Froome out of trouble on flat stages in past Tours but Stannard suffered with a virus and had to leave the Dauphine early.

As it has for the past few editions, the Sky squad contains plenty of strength and experience.

The former world champion Michal Kwiatkowski is rewarded for a hugely impressive spring with a place in the squad, which is completed by Colombian climber Sergio Henao.

Froome finished 1min 33sec behind victor Jakob Fuglsang, who is not expected to win the Tour and over a minute behind rival Richie Porte, who is one of the favourites in France.

Wout Poels, who proved instrumental to Froome's tour success last summer - riding so well that some observers felt he could have won the race himself had he been leading the team - is also absent from the lineup which could prove to be significant.

Southern Railway commuters face renewed driver strike threat
The announcements coincided with the publication of a report by the Network Rail director Chris Gibb on the company's performance. A DfT spokesman said: "Chris Gibb's report sets out the reasons why the Southern rail system faced so many problems past year ".

"Aiming for that fourth victory has given me a lot of motivation", Froome said.

"I'm now still under contract until the end of 2018 with Team Sky, but we are talking about an extension", Froome told Press Association Sport. Every Tour is a different battle in terms of getting that yellow jersey and then trying to hold on to it.

"I've managed to win three Tours whilst being at Team Sky and with the support of the team, the structure around me".

"I can definitely take confidence from my races and I feel like I'm where I need to be knowing that July is when I need to perform".

But the race is being tipped as one of the most open in years, with less high mountain stages than in previous years - where Froome makes his climbing legs count.

Team Sky were founded by Sir Dave Brailsford in 2009 and launched in 2010, with Froome joining from their inception.

"I'm feeling good on the bike so far this month", he said after a number of training rides along parts of the Tour route.
