Gergen: Special election victories show Trump could beat Dems in 2020

With the support of a notoriously republican district and of President Trump, Handel was able to defeat Ossoff by over 12-thousand votes.

Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel spent over $50 million between their campaigns, making this the most expensive race of its kind.

The political number crunchers have produced a variety of analyses of the results in the recent special elections in Kansas, Montana, Georgia and SC in an attempt to quantify the two parties' strength in the Trump era.

The lesson for Democrats is that anti-Trumpism is not enough, at least not at this point.

Republican Karen Handel has won Georgia's record-breaking special congressional election, dashing hopes by Democrats to pull off an upset in the run-up to the 2018 midterm elections.

"There's going to be some finger pointing among the Democrats". That makes the party 0-for-4 in this year's races for Republican-held congressional seats. "We need a genuinely new message, a serious jobs plan that reaches all Americans, and a bigger tent".

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH), who ran an unsuccessful campaign to unseat House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) a year ago, said Thursday it will be hard for his party to take back control of the House with Pelosi at the helm.

Senator Chris Murphy of CT told MSNBC that Democrats needed to focus on economic growth and "get back to being a big tent party".

Two weeks earlier, it complained that its state-owned news agency had been hacked and fake news stories embedded in its system. An FBI investigation, conducted in Doha , confirmed the hacking and named Russian Federation as the likely culprit.

Rep. Kathleen Rice (D., N.Y.) denied Thursday that House Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelsoi (D., Calif.) is an "out of touch San Francisco liberal", but did say that Pelosi's time leading the party in Congress has "come and gone".

While Republicans have mocked Pelosi's leadership in the past - the Republican National Committee sarcastically endorsed Pelosi for minority leader previous year - the party's successful strategy of linking Democratic congressional hopefuls to the unpopular minority leader has caused some Democrats to call for new leadership.

"The Democratic Party needs new leadership now", Cunningham tweeted.

After several of the co-hosts suggested Democrat Jon Ossoff performed better than anyone thought he would against Republican Karen Handel in the red district, Behar got brutally honest. The results suggest that Democrats will need more than low approval ratings for the president if they hope to achieve their goal of taking control of the House next year.

Since the special election in April, President Trump has been campaigning for Handel through various outlets including his twitter account.

"The Democrats have lost three elections", she said. "They don't get it. You know they're still trying to figure where all those voters came from", he said of Democrats. After four special elections nationwide, Democrats still haven't won any seats.

Behar also criticized Ossoff for failing to even move to the district where he was running for Congress.
