North Korea responded by warning of a "merciless retaliatory strike" if the US acts first.
Ostensibly Saturday's event was to mark the 105th anniversary of Kim Il-Sung's birth - a date known as the "Day of the Sun" in the North - and a squadron of warplanes flew overhead forming the number.
Moreover, the North has taken the recent deployment of a USA naval strike group to the region as grounds for its continued testing of nuclear and missile weapons technologies.
"We will respond to an all-out war with an all-out war and a nuclear war with our style of a nuclear attack", Mr Choe said.
But U.S. officials told The Associated Press on Friday that the Trump administration had settled on a policy that will emphasize increasing pressure on Pyongyang with the help of China, North Korea's only major ally, instead of military options or trying to overthrow Kim's regime.

The supreme leader of North Korea was all smiles as he unveiled what appeared to be his new intercontinental nuclear missile in a military parade today. In a test launch in August a year ago, the missile flew 500 kilometers (310 miles) after being launched from a submarine and crashed into waters near Japan, prompting Kim Jong Un to declare that North Korea had gained "perfect nuclear-attack capability".

Several KN-08 missiles were rolled out on trucks at the parade.
For outside military analysts, though, the highlight is the weaponry that the North puts on display.
Chad O'Carroll, managing director of specialist service NK News, told AFP they could be a liquid-fuelled intercontinental ballistic missile, or an early version of one, even though Pyongyang has yet to formally announce it has an operational ICBM. There are, however, concerns that the nation is possibly preparing for its sixth nuclear test or a missile launch soon.
The parade also featured the North's submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) for the first time.
