Despite it being nearly four years since former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was first charged with murder, and despite Hernandez already being convicted for one murder and serving a life sentence in prison, he remains on trail and the Patriots remain indirectly in the spotlight.

Prosecutors have wrapped up their case in the double-murder trial of ex-NFL star Aaron Hernandez.

In his closing argument, Hernandez's lawyer called the state's star witness the real killer.

Baez said the other witnesses who encountered Hernandez on the night of the alleged murders painted a much different picture of him, saying he was friendly, and not enraged.

The defense rested on Wednesday afternoon after spending just two days calling witnesses, none of whom were Hernandez himself.

Closing arguments are scheduled for Thursday in Suffolk Superior Court. Hernandez is on trial for the July 2012 killings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado who he encountered in a Boston nightclub.

Alexander Bradley's cousin, Robert Lindsey, said Bradley called him on February 14, 2013, and told him that Hernandez had shot him in the eye a day earlier. He said Alexander Bradley - a former friend of Hernandez's - shot the men over a drug deal.

"Alexander Bradley was a three-legged pony and they were going to ride him to the finish line no matter what he said. what lies he told", Baez said.

Meanwhile, prosecution maintains that Hernandez is the tie between the murder vehicle and the murder weapon and killed the men because he felt disrespected when one of the men bumped into him. Bradley said Hernandez leaned across him in the driver's seat and yelled to the men, "Yo, what's up now?" followed by a racial slur.

In his final appeal to jurors, prosecutor Patrick Haggan said Hernandez gunned down two men in Boston in 2012 because he had "an illogical sense of being disrespected". Salvador said he did not see anyone bump into Hernandez. Seated one row behind them was Hernandez's longtime fiancee, Shayanna Jenkins Hernandez.

Hernandez is now serving a life sentence for the 2013 murder of semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd.
