Michael Gove returns to Cabinet in Theresa May's post-election reshuffle

Pressed on reports of secret talks between Cabinet ministers and Labour MPs, Mr Gove said the hung parliament meant that the Government would have to "work with everyone".

Delivery of the government's plan to improve air quality will be overseen by the former Education Secretary Michael Gove, who has been appointed Secretary of State for the Environment. In 2013, as Secretary of State for Education, Mr Gove planned to remove climate change from the geography syllabus only to abandon plans after Ed Davey, the then energy and climate change secretary, fought for the topic's retention.

May fired Gove from his post of justice secretary when she took over as PM, but brought him back into cabinet after last week's election.

Michael Gove's appointment back to the cabinet has surprised many, but the news he is to be the new Environment Secretary has particularly anxious green campaigners.

He generally voted against measures to slow down climate change, data from TheyWorkForYou shows.

"I was quite surprised, I have to say".

But, adds the journalist, a source close to the discussions at the time said there were attempts, not necessarily by Gove, not to "stress the human causes" of climate change as an attempt to placate the "right wing of the Conservative Party". The move is understood to have been taken to shore up support for a hard Brexit. "Having served notice of our departure from the European Union at the end of March, we really do need to be using all the time at our disposal to negotiate our exit and put in place the necessary policies, governing structures, statues and frameworks required for beyond March 2019", he said.

'This appointment is further evidence of both Theresa May's complete disregard for the environment and her desperation to hold together a Government in chaos'.

The move is a part of a cabinet reshuffle by the Prime Minister Theresa May following last week's General Election, in which the Conservatives lost an overall parliamentary majority following gains by the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats.

Downing Street has also revealed that Liam Fox has retained his role as global trade secretary.

Mr Gove's appointment as Environment Secretary came after former chancellor George Osborne branded the prime minister "dead woman walking", warning that she could be ousted from No 10 in a matter of days.

While the Conservatives, under May, remain the largest single party in the House of Commons, they have been forced to form a minority government and looking for support from Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party.
