UK: All building cladding samples tested failed fire safety

The evacuation comes amid widening worries about the safety of high-rise apartment blocks across the country following the inferno that engulfed Grenfell Tower on June 14, killing at least 79 people.

Some 34 high-rise buildings in 17 local authorities in England have already failed urgent fire tests conducted after Grenfell, the government announced Saturday, raising fears that thousands more may need to leave their homes.

Police said on Friday that the fire at Grenfell was started by a faulty refrigerator but quickly spread through the building due to the highly-flammable cladding, as well as tiles and insulation that failed safety tests.

Camden Council leader Georgia Gould told BBC News that 83 residents had refused to leave, adding the situation "will become a matter for the fire service".

The scope of Britain's fire-safety crisis broadened Saturday as London officials scrambled to evacuate four public housing towers due to concerns about external cladding, fire doors and insulation around gas pipes.

Fire brigade safety inspections last Friday determined that the towers were unsafe to spend another night in, with the council owners taking no chances.

More than 700 flats in tower blocks on an estate in the Swiss Cottage area of north-west London have been evacuated because of fire safety concerns.

Mrs May said she will do "what is necessary" to ensure people removed from blocks, like in Camden last night, have somewhere to stay, adding that work is done to make the buildings safe.

Gould said the council is looking at accommodation including student halls and opening up newly built social housing, with hopes that by Monday 50% of tenants will be accommodated in the borough.

The samples came from 17 different locations around the country, including London, Manchester, Plymouth and Portsmouth.

Speaking at an event celebrating Armed Forces Day in Liverpool, Theresa May revealed "it wasn't just a question of the cladding" but "a number of other issues" with the Camden tower blocks that concerned the fire service.

Indeed, it is only by virtue of Falcinelli’s prowess in the final third that Crotone still remains in contention to survive. In Romelu Lukaku, Koeman has a player with the capability of firing Everton to far headier heights than seventh place.

Until now, public attention has been focused on external cladding material that is widely used to provide insulation and enhance the appearance of buildings.

"I have a disabled mother, I have animals in my property - they are not doing anything and no-one is telling us anything - it is ridiculous".

Now hundreds of residents face up to four weeks in temporary accommodations as workers try to upgrade the buildings' fire safety features.

"We are now rapidly identifying buildings of concern: samples are being tested very quickly; fire inspectors are checking the safety of the buildings as a whole; and we have issued interim safety guidance", he said.

"My thoughts are with residents being evacuated in Camden while their homes are made safe tonight", she said via her official UK Prime Minister account.

"It was perfectly safe before, despite what they are saying now - I believe I am safe in there".

Mandy Ryan, who shares her 22nd-floor flat in Dorney with her disabled son, said: "I was bullied this morning trying to leave the building".

It saw 650 homes on the Chalcots Estate evacuated on Friday evening with less than an hour's notice.

The blocks were refurbished between 2006 and 2009 by the same firm, Rydon, that oversaw work completed at Grenfell Tower a year ago and with the same type of aluminium composite (ACM) panels.
