President Donald Trump says the death of a 22-year-old college student who was detained for almost a year and a half in North Korea is a "total disgrace".

It said his medical records from an air ambulance service that brought him to OH and from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was hospitalized until his death Monday, have been reviewed, and the treating physicians have been interviewed extensively.

A spokesman for the Hamilton County coroner says Dr Lakshmi Sammaraco's office has accepted the case.

His family is blaming North Korea for "awful, torturous mistreatment".

His tweet comes a day after learning that Otto Warmbier, an American student who was returned from North Korea to the U.S.in a coma last week, had died.

The University of Virginia student was tried and convicted of stealing a propaganda sign and sentenced to 15-years in prison with hard labour in January.

His death also brought attention to North Korea's human rights record. They said it should be a "call to action to those in the position to protect our American citizens here at home AND overseas". Every life is important - Otto's life, lives of the American detainees, and the lives of each person in North Korea. He died six days later surrounded by relatives in his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio.

The tweet, which came hours before the U.S. and China were set to meet in Washington to talk about North Korea, caught multiple Trump administration officials off guard, leaving them scrambling as they tried to figure out what exactly the President meant, CNN reported.

Shortly before he was freed, his parents told the Washington Post newspaper they had been informed by the North Korean authorities that their son had contracted botulism, a rare illness that causes paralysis, soon after his trial.

On Wednesday, hooded police and forensic officers raided a home in the neighborhood and left with bags full of evidence. One man has reportedly been shot , though there have been no confirmed reports of casualties so far by the authorities.

"A lot of bad things happened, but at least we got him home to be with his parents, where they were so happy to see him even though he was in very tough condition", Trump said Monday, reacting to Warmbier's death. "That's how - our travel restrictions and such is run through the State Department, so I'd refer you to them".

Warmbier's family said they believed the student had found peace after being flown home.

Warmbier died in OH on Monday, days after being released by North Korea while in a coma.

The Cavalier Daily reports the University of Virginia Student Council will hold a vigil for Warmbier at 9pm Tuesday on campus.

Why? To make a political point, to show the US that this is what you get if you mess with North Korea.

Three other USA citizens, who are ethnic Koreans, and six South Koreans remain in custody in North Korea. He died less than a week after returning from North Korea.

He said the form would require Americans to affirm they're aware of what's transpired to other US citizens, such as Warmbier, whom the senator said was "murdered" by the North.

Also, doctors at the medical centre, where he was treated, said that he suffered from "unresponsive wakefulness" due to "severe neurological injury".

"Otto's untimely death has rightly sparked public outrage across the nation", she said. "Obviously, China has played and can continue to play a greater role in helping to resolve this situation, and we will continue to hopefully build on the relationship and the dialogue that we've had with China", Spicer said.
