In a nail-bitingly close runoff special election, Republican Karen Handel has defeated Democrat Jon Ossoff for Georgia's 6th congressional district seat, which opened when Tom Price was appointed to be President Donald Trump's health and human services secretary.

Proving once again that pollsters are little more than high-priced scam artists, Karen Handel won 51.4% of the vote over Ossoff, who got 48.6%. Ossoff himself once described his bid as a chance to "make Trump furious".

"We showed the world that in places where no one thought it was even possible we could fight (that) we could fight", Ossoff told supporters.

'Congratulations to Karen Handel on her big win in Georgia 6th.

The conclusion of the two races marks the end of a busy 2017 special election season ― from here on out, there won't be a congressional general election until December, when Alabama voters will pick a replacement for former senator and current attorney general Jeff Sessions.

The margin allows Republicans a sigh of relief after what is being recognised as the most expensive House of Representatives race in United States history, with a price tag that may exceed 50 million dollars (£40 million). Her protestations aside, Handel often embraced the national tenor of the race, joining a GOP chorus that lambasted Ossoff as a "dangerous liberal" who was "hand-picked" by House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California. "The enthusiasm on the ground has been fantastic", she said.

Soon afterwards, Mr Ossoff appeare to speak to his supporters in the ballroom of the Westin Perimeter Hotel in Atlanta.

Perhaps not surprisingly, $49,224,731 came from residents of the Los Angeles area. She also pointed to the millions of dollars that had poured into Mr Ossoff's campaign from outside of the state, something that could also have been said of her campaign.
