US congressman Scalise still in critical condition - hospital

Republican and Democrat members of Congress kneeled at the second base and prayed in a touching dedication to Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) during their annual charity baseball game.

When Scalise arrived in the hospital, he had an "imminent risk of death" and was "as critical as you can be", doctors also said.

Scalise was shot along with three other victims on Wednesday when a gunman opened fire at a park in Alexandria, Va., where a group of Republican lawmakers were holding an early-morning baseball practice.

The bullet entered Scalise's left hip and tore across his pelvis, cracking bones and injuring organs and blood vessels.

"It's my job to be pessimistic, so if you accuse me of being optimistic, I feel bad about that", Sava said.

Trump made his comments as Scalise remained in critical condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center following multiple surgeries.

The No. 3 House Republican will also require additional operations before leaving the hospital Sava said, though he added that an "excellent recovery is a good possibility".

But Mr. Scalise is expected to recover.

Hospital officials said it is hard to predict how long the congressman will be in the hospital, but that he is expected to be able to walk and hopefully run after a period of rehabilitation.

Sava also gave an update on Capitol Police Special Agent Crystal Griner, who sustained a gunshot wound to the ankle during the shooting.

After Hodgkinson's shooting spree began on Wednesday morning at a Congressional GOP baseball practice, he was shot by Capitol Police on the scene and subsequently died of his injuries.

Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".

Jennifer Scalise says in a statement that the family is "especially appreciative of the strong outpouring of love and support from our neighbors, friends, from Louisiana and across the country".

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body. "As well as President Trump, Vice President Pence and all of Steve's colleagues who have reached out during this challenging time".

Matt Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods, was shot multiple times in his chest and suffered massive trauma.

Law enforcement officials proceeded Friday with their investigation of the attack at a suburban Virginia park, including examining Hodgkinson's social media activities and his home in Belleville, Illinois. Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".
