Tulsa's Mike Neal Talks About Long-Time Friend Scalise After Shooting

Democratic and Republican members of Congress are going to bat for unity at their annual charity baseball game on Thursday, just one day after the shooting of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and several others at a GOP practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

Doctors treating wounded House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise have upgraded his condition from "critical" to "serious".

"Earlier today, Congressman Steve Scalise underwent a second surgery related to his internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg", MedStar said in a statement Thursday.

Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said the team working with Scalise is "encouraged" by his progress. "We have controlled the internal bleeding, and his vital signs have stabilized", Sava said at a press conference. At a press conference, President Trump says that wounded Scalise's condition is more hard than people first realized.

The shooter was identified as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill. The hospital also said it will continue to provide periodical updates.

A list of Republican lawmakers was found on Hodgkinson's body, CBS News reported, citing an unidentified United States official.

Scalise's chief of staff also read a statement from his wife thanking people for their prayers - and the Capitol Hill Police whose actions may have saved his life. Scalise's security detail returned fire, and Hodgkinson was later shot by police and died thereafter.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".

Scalise, Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika, congressional aide Zach Barth and US Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner were shot during an attack on the Republican congressional baseball team as it practiced Wednesday morning.

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", Dr Sava said.
