The opposing sides are paying tribute to Rep. Steve Scalise, the House majority whip who was critically wounded when a gunman opened fire at a Republican baseball practice in Virginia on Wednesday.
The Associated Press reported Thursday night that Scalise's doctors had said the majority whip "remains in critical condition but has shown improvement".
Senior Congressman Steve Scalise's condition was upgraded to "serious" after he underwent a second surgery on Saturday, after he was injured in a shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice earlier this week. Sava called Scalise's injury a "trans-pelvic gunshot wound", describing how a bullet entered his body near his left hip and traveled toward his right hip, causing "substantial damage to bones, organs and blood vessels".
Despite the hospital's comment about Scalise's progress, "critical condition" is still defined by the American Hospital Association as a state in which vital signs are unstable and in which "indicators are unfavorable".
Trump added that Scalise is "having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought" following the shooting Wednesday.
Scalise's security detail and other police officers shot and killed the assailant, James Hodgkinson of IL, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media.

The amendment on Russian Federation , which passed in a 97-2 vote on Wednesday, was attached to a bill to strengthen sanctions on Iran.
The game at Nationals Park, Washington DC, carried on a century-old bipartisan ritual, this one tinged with worry about Louisiana Republican Mr Scalise, 51, and the determination to answer the attack by coming together in sport. One of the two Capitol Police officers shot, Special Agent David Bailey, threw the first pitch.
Scalise - seen here after being shot in the hip - underwent another surgery Saturday. Richmond, who plays for the Democratic team, said he had visited the hospital multiple times.
The president said that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".
A budget increase for the US Capitol Police from just under $400 million this year is among the ideas under consideration. "That is the source of unity, and more than ever, we must embrace it", the president said.
Rep. Franks says, "I have been notified there is an investigation I might be involved in".
