Investigators studying Wednesday's attack at a suburban Virginia park said Thursday that shooter James Hodgkinson had obtained his rifle and handgun from licensed firearms dealers.
Scalise and three other people were shot early Wednesday at a park in suburban Washington as they practiced for a congressional charity baseball game. "The doctor added, however, that Scalise will certainly be in the hospital for a considerable period of time, presumably weeks". He remains in critical condition.
Scalise, 51, sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip early on Wednesday at a baseball field in a suburb of Washington. Shimkus says the main problem is those on the extreme right and left want flawless agreement on their views, which goes against American democracy.
Scalise has received multiple blood transfusions, which can affect clotting, something doctors will monitor closely. Infection also is a risk, especially if the intestines were perforated.
Scalise, the third most powerful Republican in the House, was shot through the hip. The fact that his injuries brought him close to death was not widely known initially.
Williams, a Republican coach who injured his leg and ankle while diving for cover during the shooting, also said it was important to play ball as planned.

Pushing that message of unity were the House leaders Speaker Paul Ryan and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who told CNN's Jake Tapper on CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront" that despite party affiliation they were both on "Team Scalise".
"He's in some trouble", Trump said during a jobs event at the White House, calling Scalise a "great fighter" and "he's going to be OK, I hope".
