The White House said President Donald Trump had been briefed about the launch.
"It is a severe threat to the peace and stability of not only the Korean peninsula, but also the worldwide community", a statement from South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
They have a large stockpile of short-range Scud Missiles developed by the Soviet Unions and modified versions can fire as far as 1,000km.
The South's Joint Chiefs of Staff described it as a Scud-type missile which flew for some 280 miles, NPR's Jihye Lee tells our Newscast unit, from Seoul. "We have strongly protested to North Korea and condemn its actions in the strongest terms", he added.
"This is a clear violation of the UN Security Council's relevant resolutions and poses a serious threat not only to the Korean Pen insula but also to global peace and security", the ministry stressed.
But China, the North's main trade partner and ally, has repeatedly called for a resumption of six-party talks that have been dormant since North Korea walked out on the negotiations in 2009.
