In his written testimony, Comey quoted Trump as telling him the Russian Federation investigation was a "cloud" impairing his ability to operate as president.

Comey said Trump told him that "I need loyalty".

The hearing could have significant repercussions for Mr Trump's presidency as special counsel Robert Mueller and several congressional committees investigate alleged Russian efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election and whether Mr Trump's campaign colluded with this.

Although Comey is not planning to say that Trump intentionally obstructed justice, his account of their conversations about the FBI's investigation into Russian Federation and Michael Flynn could cast a cloud over the White House and its 70-year-old occupant with especially thin skin.

Comey's detailed and vivid recollections of his one-on-one conversations with Trump were revealed in seven pages of prepared testimony released Wednesday, the day before his appearance before the Senate intelligence committee.

At a February 14 meeting at the White House, Comey said Trump strongly defended Flynn, arguing that his former national security adviser "hadn't done anything wrong" in his prior contact with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. "He is eager to continue to move forward with his agenda". "Lordy, I hope there are tapes", Comey remarked at one point, suggesting such evidence would back up his account over any claims from the president.

The Senate panel released Comey's written testimony on Wednesday, shifting the drama on Thursday to the question and answer period of the hearing.

Comey was called to testify about his encounters with Trump since the president was elected, and whether Trump had obstructed justice in any of his dealings with Comey.

Comey's written and verbal testimony confirmed that he told Trump that he was not personally under investigation, as Trump had asserted in his termination letter to Comey.

Comey said that he believed it was his right to publicize the details of what he viewed were unclassified recollections of his conversation with Trump in his role as a private citizen.

"I am so sorry I didn't get to say goodbye to you publicly", he said.

Spicer pointedly said the 'same people who are critiquing his use of it now, critiqued it during the election, and it turned out pretty well for him then'.
