The longtime Trump confidante also said that Comey's firing "had nothing to do with Russian Federation". The Intelligence Committee declined the deal and has now followed up with an official subpoena. Concerns have also been raised about undisclosed payments Flynn received from the Russia-backed TV network RT, and his unregistered lobbying that may have benefited Turkey, which took place when he was advising the Trump campaign. Richard Burr, R-North Carolina, and Mark Warner, D-Virginia, said it requested documents that members believe to be relevant to its investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

But Mr Burr also said the committee would continue to press ahead with its investigation wherever it leads.

Flynn was sacked by Trump in February after published reports that the national security adviser had misled Vice President Pence about his discussions with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

In late March Flynn requested immunity from prosecution to testify before the committee because he "certainly has a story to tell, and he very much wants to tell it", his lawyer Robert Kelner said.

His ouster, on Feb 13 after less than four weeks as national security adviser, came after he was shown to have lied to Vice-President Mike Pence about his talks with Mr Kislyak.

Former acting U.S. attorney-general Sally Yates testified at a high-profile hearing on Monday that she had warned the White House in January that Mr Flynn had been compromised and could have been vulnerable to blackmail by Russian Federation.

The announcement comes a day after the Trump administration fired James B. Comey from his post as the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), citing his handling of a probe into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's emails as the reason for his termination.
