A gunman has shot and killed a police chief and two nursing home staff members in the U.S. state of OH, according to police. His girlfriend worked at the nursing home where the shooting happened and was identified as one of the victims.
Police say the suspect killed Kirkersville Chief Steven Eric Disario and two female employees at Pine Kirk Care Center.
Thorp said the police chief engaged the gunman near the rear of the nursing home.
The police chief was a father of six with a seventh child on the way, Thorp said.
"It's a hard day for all of us", Thorp told reporters, according to the Associated Press.
In January 2016, Danville Police Officer Thomas Cottrell Jr. was shot and killed in the line of duty. "I'm just sad to hear so many innocent people died", she said.
Flowers and flags appeared in an impromptu memorial outside the village police hall, located less than a block from the site of the shooting.
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said the accused shooter took two hostages in an alley, but both were released unharmed.
Some of the nursing home's 23 residents barricaded themselves during the shooting, but none of them was injured, he said.

Patrick Ward, a 47-year-old sales director, said his heart operation, scheduled for Friday, was canceled at St. He said: "We are monitoring the situation here as are all health boards in Scotland".
Thorp said law enforcers were still working to determine what, if any, relationship the man had with the nursing home.
The shooting closed down the main street in the village, which was flooded with police officers from several surrounding agencies and with ambulances. The village of about 500 residents is roughly 25 miles (39 kilometers) east of Columbus.
The order lasts through sunset Tuesday.
Hartless has been accused of killing Medrano and two others, including a police chief at a nursing home on Friday.
Police are still investigating and are unsure yet of a motive or what weapons were used.
Students who were en route to Kickersville Elementary School, which is near the nursing home, were diverted to Watkins Middle School, according to local reports.
The nearby elementary school has been placed on lockdown, NBC4i reports. "The judicial system, I don't know where the break is, but there's definitely something that needs addressed". "They didn't call us till like 15-20 minutes later".
Gov John Kasich expressed his condolences in a tweet. People shouted that they needed police, the witness said. "Ask for prayers for those injured. My office stands ready to assist in any way it can as law enforcement continue to investigate".
When responding officers arrived on the scene, they found his body in the street.
