Hendrick Motorsports announced Tuesday that Earnhardt will be retiring at the end of the season.
Hendrick Motorsports says that Dale will discuss his decision in an afternoon press conference on April 25 and will be joined by Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick.
NASCAR's 14-time Most Popular Driver, will retire following the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season, Hendrick Motorsports announced Tuesday morning.
"I think Carl figured out a way to get into a place to make that decision easy". In Victory Lane as he celebrated, Earnhardt and his iconic father, Dale Earnhardt Sr., shared a poignant moment.
The season-opening race has passed (Earnhardt wrecked out), but the Florida track does host the Coke Zero 400 on July 1, a race he's won twice.
"I just wanted the opportunity to go out on my own terms", Earnhardt said.

On Tuesday morning, he tweeted: "Canada has made business for our dairy farmers in Wisconsin and other border states very hard ". Commerce Department said that in 2016 softwood lumber imports from Canada were valued at $5.66 billion.
His departure from the sport comes on the heels of Jeff Gordon's retirement at the end of the 2015 season, and Tony Stewart's retirement in 2016.
Recently, Earnhardt Jr. has been plagued by concussions, causing him to miss half of last season. Ten years later, Earnhardt sustained two concussions in six weeks, one he self-diagnosed at a tire test in Kansas and another after a big crash at Talladega. Chase Elliott and Jimmie Johnson are carrying the four-car team in 2017, but Johnson said in February that he would begin considering retirement whenever "the time is right".
Earnhardt, a two-time Daytona 500 victor and the son of seven-time Nascar champion Dale Sr, has consistently been one of Nascar's best-loved drivers. The son of the late seven-time champion, Dale Earnhardt, has never won a Cup title, however. I guess what I'm saying is I accomplished way more than I ever dreamed - way more. My eyes got rather watery, I admit, as I watched Dale Jr. streak across the finish line in first with a push from a teammate and then start an impromptu celebration in the tri-oval grass. Earnhardt Jr., the current NASCAR Busch Series points leader, will drive a Budweiser-sponsored auto in five select Winston Cup races in 1999 while racing a full Busch Series schedule.
Before he was tearing it up on NASCAR's top circuit, Earnhardt Jr. proved himself in the Busch Grand National Series, now known as the Xfinity Series. I didn't dream of winning championships or Daytona 500s or working with one of the best owners in the business, driving for one of the best organizations.
Earnhardt turns 43 in October, was married during the offseason and has stated he wants a family.
With all the medical advancements and research that has been done into brain injuries and the lasting effects that participating in physically taxing sports over the past few years, concussions are no longer something to be brushed off.
