Payless ShoeSource files for bankruptcy protection

The closures follow the company's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, making it the latest retailer with locations in Grand Forks to enter bankruptcy.

According to the list, the Payless stores at 1201 Columbus St. and the one at the Shops At River Walk will be closing soon. Previous reports suggested the chain might close up to 1,000 stores in a restructuring plan with its lenders. The Payless shoe store in the Salina Central Mall is not among them, and will stay open.

A Payless at 1411 S. University Drive in Fargo closed February 5.

Two stores in Vermont set to close are located at the Highgate Commons Shopping Center in Saint Albans and the Berlin Mall.

The company has not disclosed the locations of the stores that are set to close.

The Topeka, Kan. -based retailer said Tuesday that it will be immediately closing almost 400 stores, including five in the Inland area, as part of the reorganization. The privately held company was founded in 1956 in Topeka, Kan.

Geils's first instrument was the trumpet, and he saw jazz stars Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis perform when he was young. Authorities were doing a well-being check on Tuesday when they found Geils dead from what is described as natural causes.

Shoppers are increasingly shifting their buying online or going to discount stores like T.J. Maxx to grab deals on designer brands.

Payless said Tuesday that it planned to close nearly 400 poorly performing stores in the United States and Puerto Rico. That shift has hurt traditional retailers, even low-price outlets like Payless.

Payless is the tenth retailer to file Chapter 11 this year, reported CNBC, which cited a recent study by AlixPartners.

Payless ShoeSource is shuttering hundreds of stores, but the Dunkirk location will not be affected.

Other retailers that have announced store closures this year include Macy's, Kmart, JCPenney, Sears and RadioShack.

Payless still operates about 4,000 stores globally.
