Anderson and Smith married in late-January but Smith broke off the marriage about a month and a half later when he accused her of infidelity.

When he failed to win her back, he shot and killed her, the police chief said. After they split, Anderson began acting odd and threatening her, but according to Smith's mother, Smith did not take any of the accusations seriously because she thought he was just trying to get attention. The shooter was identified as Cedric Anderson.

Anderson had been arrested four times since 1982, though none resulted in convictions, Burguan said. Police in Torrance were called to his home five times that year. Attempts to reach members of Anderson's family have been unsuccessful.

Classes at the North Park Elementary school are cancelled for the remainder of the week and will resume on Monday, April 17.
