At the time of the tips-are-welcome announcement, drivers in Seattle, Minneapolis and Houston were granted e-tips.
Tipping officially launches in the District on Monday afternoon, an Uber spokesman said.
To mark the occasion, the ride-hailing service said it will match every tip given by riders to drivers across the country on Tuesday, including in Buffalo.
Uber riders in Detroit can now tip their drivers.
The shift is part of what Uber is calling its "180 days of change", during which the company will roll out several features to address driver concerns.

The company is celebrating the rollout by matching all tips given out tomorrow (hint, hint).
Passengers can also give tips to drivers who have given them rides in the last 30 days, the app announced. The app suggests a $1, $2 or $5 tip, and riders can enter a custom amount. "It starts with tipping, which is now available in the Uber Driver app".
A press release sent out by the company said that tipping has always been desired by drivers but the new tip feature is optional for riders.
In a statement Monday, Lyft illustrated the impact of its tipping feature on its driver earnings, while issuing a characteristic jab at its chief competitor. "In the end, we decided against including one because we felt it would be better for riders and drivers to know for sure what they would pay or earn on each trip - without the uncertainty of tipping", the company wrote in an August 2016 blog post.
