Russia fires missiles from Mediterranean at IS in Syria

From the waters of the Mediterranean sea, Russian warships inflicted a crushing blow on the terrorist group "Islamic state" in Syria.

Russian Federation launched a flurry of cruise missiles into Syria Friday, targeting Islamic State fighters with a strike that also demonstrates Moscow's ability to use its muscle to advance the interests of a Syrian government hostile to USA -backed militias.

The strikes destroyed command posts and weapons and ammunition stores, according to the Russian Defence Ministry.

The decision was not taken on the basis of Syrian aircraft was shot down by the U.S., but, instead, it was taken when the Russian authorities have warned the United States military and its allies by barring them from entering the Syrian airspace, especially the west of the Euphrates River.

Russian Federation is the most powerful ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, and the rare air-to-air encounter prompted Moscow to suspend a de-confliction hotline with the US-led coalition, created to prevent any accidents in the skies over Syria. While global players are focused on targeting ISIS, many are maneuvering to either prop up or depose Assad and his regime.

The ministry also captured the attack on the camera (watch below). It is a major escalation of Iran's role in the war.

"The terrorist convoy of 39 pickup trucks was detected and destroyed by the Air Force on its way to Palmyra", the source said, adding that the vehicles had been equipped with large-caliber machine guns.

Dillon would not say if Russian Federation had used the line to warn the Americans ahead of the strike, but a USA defense official confirmed to AFP that it had.

This was the first time the United States downed a Syrian plane right from the time the civil war began in 2011 and came on Sunday after the SU-22 jet dropped bombs near American-backed fighters fighting the Islamic State.

Israel and Turkey were informed prior to the launch while there is no word on whether the US-led coalition forces were notified.

When that proved unsuccessful, coalition aircraft performed "strafing runs" near the regime positions, which halted their advance.

But the downing did not appear to hamper Syria, which attempted a similar bombing Tuesday, according to USA military officials.

A U.S. official told CNN that another Syrian Su-22 fighter made an approach Tuesday in what the military assessed as a possible bombing run on USA backed-Syrian Democratic Forces near the same area.

Turkey, Russia and Iran are working on a mechanism on de-escalation zones in Syria involving the USA and respective zones assigned to each country, Presidential Spokesperson İbrahim Kalın said, adding that the Astana and Geneva processes will continue in order to establish permanent peace in Syria.
