Alvaro Arbeloa: Former Liverpool and West Ham defender retires

Former West Ham, Real Madrid and Liverpool full-back Alvaro Arbeloa revealed he is retiring from football.

He made his retirement announcement to Spanish newspaper Marca.

Arbeloa spent the majority of his career at Liverpool and Real Madrid, with 95 appearances being made at the Premier League club between 2007 and 2009.

He said: "It's time to say goodbye".

"I always thought I would play until my legs held out, but in the end it was a head and motivation issue", he told Marca.

Spanish defender Alvaro Arbeloa has chose to call time on his professional career. Besides being a prominent figure as full back for the clubs, he earned 56 caps for Spain's national team.

Prior to Arbeloa's time at the Santiago Bernabeu, he made nearly 100 appearances for Liverpool between 2006 and 2009. Arbeloa made more than 150 appearances for Madrid in two stints at the club and is open to a return to the Bernabeu.

He also won multiple trophies at Spanish champions Real Madrid, including one league and two Champions League titles.

A highly-decorated defender, Arbeloa won 58 caps for Spain, and has won two World Cups and the European Championship at worldwide level.
