The government has set up a £5 million emergency fund for the Grenfell Tower residents, allocating a minimum £5,500 to each household with £500 cash payments already being handed out.

In this photo released by the Metropolitan Police on Sunday, June 18, 2017, a firefighter stands outside of the Grenfell Tower after fire engulfed the 24-storey building, in London.

A senior United Kingdom government minister said Sunday that he believed the cladding is banned in Britain for buildings above a certain height.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday in the social housing block in trapping residence inside.

"There is also a real possibility that there may be people in the building that no-one knows are missing", he said. The 24-story tower that once housed up to 600 people in 120 apartments is now a charred ruin.

Finance minister Philip Hammond said the inquiry would examine whether the regulations banning certain types of cladding were right and whether they were complied with.

"My understanding is that the cladding that was reported wasn't in accordance with United Kingdom building regulations", Hands told Sky News.

Speculation has focused on the role that cladding apparently used in a recent refurbishment of the tower may have played in the fire.

The cause of Wednesday's blaze in London is still under investigation, but anger has mounted in the community amid reports that exterior panelling used in an extensive renovation completed a year ago may have helped the flames to spread.

HAUNTING pictures and video showing the sheer destruction after the fire which ripped through the Grenfell Tower block have been released.

He said the important thing is to find answers for the families that have been affected.

"We are supporting the families and the loved ones of each of those 79", Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Candy said in a statement.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted that he had attended an "incredibly moving" service at St.

"Equally there may be people who were in there that we believe are missing that did escape but for whatever reason have not let it be known that they're safe and well, so again I would appeal to them directly".

British Prime Minister Theresa May, criticized shortly after the blaze for failing to meet with victims, says the public inquiry looking into the tragedy will report directly to her. She will receive daily reports from the stricken neighbourhood, where hundreds of people have been displaced.

A minute's silence will be held at 11:00am (1000 GMT) across Britain on Monday to remember the victims.

Some families living in the tower had lost more than one member, he said. Mohammad Alhajali was initially identified last Thursday by a Syrian solidarity group he worked for.
