Tillerson also said the United States backs a Kuwaiti mediation effort aimed at resolving the crisis.

The State Department said it was "mystified" that Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates had not yet made clear their claims against Qatar or what they want to end the blockade.

India has been closely following the situation in the region in the wake of the decision by Saudi Arabia and some other Arab countries to break diplomatic relations with Qatar and closing all connectivity links with that country for its alleged support to terrorism. "The more time goes by, the more doubt is raised about the actions taken by Saudi Arabia and the (United Arab Emirates)".

At a high-level White House meeting on the crisis Friday, officials expressed frustration at the failure of Saudi Arabia, the Emirates and the others to present a promised list of their demands of Qatar. He said the hack was carried out in more than one country.

To date, the administration's messaging on the crisis has been inconsistent.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain had given their citizens a June 19 deadline to leave Qatar, a deadline which came into force on Monday. Another point of departure is Qatar's ties with Iran, with whom it shares one of the world's biggest gas fields.

On Wednesday, Trump discussed the Qatar row with Saudi Arabia's newly-appointed crown prince, on a call during which he also offered his congratulations to the new heir to the throne.
