Rocket League developer Psyonix claim, in an interview with Polygon, that they could implement cross-platform play to the game within an hour. I'm going to stop right here and congratulate the team at Psyonix and Microsoft for allowing cross network play for Rocket League, this is a huge achievement on its own and will only spur the Rocket League community and gamers alike.
Dunham appears to remain optimistic about Sony's position on cross-play, which makes sense considering PS4 to Steam play is something that works in Rocket League.
Jim Ryan: Yeah. We've got to be mindful of our responsibility to our install base. The big question now is "how will Rocket League run?"
Sony is firmly refusing to allow cross-platform multiplayer for now, but Psyonix is ready to move should the time come. "All we need is a green light from Sony". Most of the development for cross-platform play is presumably down to the developer, rather than Sony to enable a network to support it. The other one is security. He also said that Sony has to consider them first.
Explaining his comments to TechRadar, he added: "The console is fixed hardware, so we know exactly what GPU, CPU and memory is in that box. That's all we need to do".
