While Batman remained his signature role, West also collected almost 50 movie credits including roles in Drop Dead Gorgeous, The New Age, An American Vampire Story and Robinson Crusoe On Mars. "Batman " was nominated for an Emmy Award for outstanding comedy series in its first year, but it lost to CBS's "The Dick Van Dyke Show".
West gained notoriety again for voicing the mayor of Quahog on Fox network's long-running animated TV series "Family Guy".
In a statement, the family said: "Our dad always saw himself as the Bright Knight and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans" lives. The director said that West's ability to bring light into a traditionally dark character was how "true heroes spoke".
