A report claims that Tottenham Hotspur could move for Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling in this summer's transfer window.
Smalling has become an important member of the England squad and has 31 global caps under his belt.
Man United announced the signing of Swedish defender Victor Lindelof last week, and it is understood that Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho sees Lindelof and Eric Bailly as his first-choice centre-back partnership next term. The fee is much larger than United's expectations as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy drives a hard bargain.
The versatile Englishman is believed to want to play just as a midfielder going forward, rather than as a makeshift central defender as he often did at White Hart Lane last season.
Dier was reminded by Pochettino in March that it was Spurs who "provided all the tools" for him "to be a Premier League player".
Real bags 12th European title
AC Milan was the last team to retain Europe's top prize when it triumphed in 1989 and 1990. So I thought I had to add something to my game. "We played very well in the first half".
However, it is only at the traditional Premier League big payers that Dier can expect to earn the £150,000-a-week plus salaries that are not now on offer at Spurs.
It is obvious why Mourinho wants to draft a replacement for the ageing legs of Carrick, but it is questionable whether Dier is a good long-term option.
Smalling has been deemed surplus to requirements by Mourinho as the summer overhaul at United picks up shape and he will be allowed to leave the club.
However, Dier has become a mainstay at Spurs as they challenge for the title, but £50 million is a huge price to pay for a defensive midfielder.
