The Louisiana Republican is recovering from "substantial damage" he suffered when a bullet pierced his left hip and traveled directly across to the other hip, Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Friday.
He did say an "excellent recovery is a good possibility". Griner was in good condition "and in good spirits", Sava said.
"He will require additional operations to manage abdominal injuries and other bone injuries", Sava said. The team was preparing for the annual congressional baseball game, which took place as planned on Thursday.
Doctors say Rep. Steve Scalise (skuh-LEES') remains in critical condition at a Washington hospital but is improving.
He has been sedated, but has been brought out of sedation periodically and been able to recognize and communicate with his family, Sava said.
The condition of the lobbyist, Matt Mika, who was shot multiple time in the chest and arm, had improved from critical to serious Thursday afternoon, according to George Washington University Hospital.
Hundreds of bullet fragments remained in Scalise's pelvis area, according to Sava, some of which won't be removed due to risk of further damage.
Tip helps nab wanted polygamous sect leader Lyle Jeffs
On Thursday, an off-duty officer noticed a vehicle matching the description at the Lewis and Clark Marina just outside of Yankton. Jeffs waived his right for an identity and detention hearing in South Dakota, putting him in custody with the U.S.
The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP.
"The president says that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".
"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events", Jennifer Scalise said in the statement.
The gunman in the early morning attack at the ballpark in Alexandria, Virginia, was identified as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois.
Hodgkinson contacted both of his state's Democratic senators frequently, always through email links on their websites, spokesmen said Friday.
Fragments from the gunshot wound could pose an issue but doctors said that attempting to remove them would cause greater stress to his recovery. "He will certainly be in the hospital for a considerable period of time, presumably weeks". Also injured were Capital Police Officer Crystal Griner, who was shot in the ankle; Capitol Police Officer David Bailey, who injured his leg and has since been released; and Congressional staffer Zachary Barth, who was wounded in the leg and has since been released.
