The leader of the Northern Irish party in talks to support Theresa May's minority government has told the BBC her party's lawmakers will support the prime minister's legislative programme next week. May's strategy was thrown into confusion by last week's election in which she squandered her Conservative Party's parliamentary majority.

Meanwhile, talks are also continuing between the Conservatives and the DUP on the potential Westminster deal. The Northern Ireland executive, now in limbo, had committed to setting a rate of 12.5 percent, matching that of the Irish Republic, in April 2018.

British Prime Minister Theresa May's government said on Thursday it would launch her policy program next week, a sign of confidence she will strike a deal to stay in power after days of political uncertainty since losing her majority.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has called on the European Union to issue a broad reciprocal guarantee of rights for British expatriates living in the European Union after Brexit.

The British government's Office for Exiting the European Union confirmed the date in an official announcement from London. "We want to see any deal between those two parties reflect the wishes of all of the people of Northern Ireland, not just one section of the community".

"We will oppose any deal which undermines the Good Friday agreement", Sinn Fein president, Gerry Adams, told reporters outside Downing Street, in reference to the 1998 peace deal that ended three decades of sectarian violence.

Ms Foster said the talks deadline remained "realistic".

Before the Mansion House dinner was cancelled because of the fire, finance minister Hammond had been due to tackle fears among the financial elite that May's insistence that "no deal is better than a bad deal" would cost them business.

"We know each other and we understand each other", she said.

The announcement of the formal start of discussions was agreed on Thursday between Britain's Brexit minister David Davis and the European Commission's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.

After a tumultuous week that pitched Britain into its deepest political crisis since the Brexit referendum a year ago, May's future was uncertain due to her botched gamble on a snap election and a muted response to a deadly fire in London.

The spokesman said the UK's "first aim" was to move ahead on securing the rights of European Union citizens in the United Kingdom and UK citizens living in the EU.

During the complex talks, the two sides will also have to negotiate a new customs and trade regime between the single market and the UK.

"And if that wasn't enough, calling an unnecessary general election purely for the self interest of the Conservative Party and having mucked that campaign up they are now putting the country in hock to the DUP".
