Special counsel is investigating Trump for possible obstruction of justice, officials say

President Trump on Thursday criticized reports that he is now under investigation for obstruction of justice in connection with the firing of FBI Director James Comey, denouncing it as another "witch hunt" that is unfairly targeting him.

Even if Trump is found to have obstructed justice, that doesn't mean he's being sent to the slammer.

The investigation began soon after the dismissal in May of the director of the FBI, James Comey, who was conducting an investigation into alleged links between the members of Trump's election headquarters and Russian Federation.

Accusations of obstruction arose last month when Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

Robert Mueller, who is carrying out a probe into potential Russian interference in the United States election, is to interview senior intelligence bosses, according to the Washington Post.

UPDATE - 8:19 a.m. EST: Trump wasn't done tweeting yet, seeing as he's reminding Twitter that the investigation is a "witch hunt".

Recent reports have said Trump also requested help from Coats and Rogers to pressure Comey to end the investigation into Flynn's activities.

"The FBI leak regarding the president is outrageous, inexcuseable and illegal", said a representative for Kasowitz.

Mr Trump responded to reports he is personally being investigated for obstruction of justice with a characteristic scorched earth defense: claiming mistreatment of historic proportions and calling into question the probity of his accusers.

A source familiar with the matter later told CNN that Mueller's investigators have asked for information and will talk to Coats and Rogers. The New York Times reported that Trump had been waved off the idea by advisers.

The former speaker said Trump called him Monday night and that the two discussed Gingrich's concerns.

Comey told Congress last week that he leaked his memos of his conversations Trump to a friend after a tweet by the president suggested he may have taped the conversations.

The poll began the day before Comey testified publicly before the Senate intelligence committee and continued through Sunday.

About a week later, Mueller, another former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, was appointed, over Trump's opposition, as special counsel to lead the criminal probe. Mr Trump later contradicted his own staff, saying on 11 May he had the Russian Federation issue in mind when he fired Mr Comey.

A spokesman for Mr Mueller's team declined to comment on Wednesday.

BARRETT: It's probably a lesser understood part of this set of investigations that as they look at various people who were associates of the president both as president and when he was a candidate, they have also been looking at the finances of those folks. The special counsel is also seeking documents from the National Security Agency relating to the intelligence agency's interactions with the White House on the Russian Federation investigation.

Mr Trump did not directly address the allegations that he is being probed for possibly obstructing justice - a potentially impeachable offence.
