Republicans and Democrats alike were shocked and saddened to learn that House Minority Whip Steve Scalise and several others were shot Wednesday morning while practicing for a charity baseball game.
Authorities say the gunman in Alexandria, Virgina was 66-year-old James Hodgkinson who lived in Belleville, which is a town in southwestern IL off Interstate 64.
Sanders said in a statement that Hodgkinson "apparently" worked as a volunteer for his presidential campaign previous year. In a 2015 Facebook post, Hodgkinson shared a political cartoon about Rep. Scalise and added the comment: "Here's a Republican that should lose his job, but they gave him a raise". Officials said Hodgkinson has been identified as the man who opened fire on Republican lawm.
In the letters, he wrote extensively about income inequality and called repeatedly for higher taxes on the rich.
"(The investigating deputy) said he was very cordial.
"It kind of makes you mad to see how crooked our politicians really are", he said in a letter in October 2010 lamenting what he viewed as the tax system's inequities.
Hodgkinson's criminal history included a 2006 arrest on battery charges that were later dismissed, as well as multiple traffic violations. Brennwald thought it was odd he never saw Hodgkinson exercise or wear workout clothes and considered asking a staffer about him but never did, he said.
