Police released a statement which said: "At 11.10am on Friday a man was detained near to the Palace of Westminster".
London police say a man with a knife has been arrested near the House of Commons in London. "Police around him, telling everyone to move back".
John Aaront tweeted: "Man just arrested outside Houses of Parliament".
"There were about three or four policeman, one of them shouting at the crowd to get back", the witness, who declined to give their name, told Reuters.

A Parliamentary spokesman said: "We are aware of an incident outside the Palace of Westminster, which is being dealt with by the Metropolitan Police".

The arrest comes with the nation on alert after a series of deadly attacks. Since then, a suicide bomber attacked a concert in Manchester and several attackers left people dead on and near London Bridge in a vehicle-and-knife rampage.
