Congressman Steve Scalise remains in critical condition following surgery to fix injuries sustained after he was shot at a congressional baseball practice Wednesday, hospital officials announced in a statement on Thursday evening. But beyond that and a brief discussion of the hospital statement released Wednesday night, leadership did not give additional details on his condition or prognosis.
The Republican and Democratic teams were still expected to take the field as scheduled for Thursday night's Congressional Baseball Game.
For the game, which began in 1909, members of the Senate and House of Representatives donned uniforms representing teams from their constituencies, and many topped them with hats from Louisiana State University, Scalise's alma mater, as a tribute.
The game is one of the most anticipated events of summer in the capital, with Democrats and Republicans splitting the 79 games that have been played over the years 39-39, with one tie. The crowd chanted "USA!" "He's in some trouble, but he's a great fighter and he's going to be okay, we hope".
The shooter is identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois.
The bullet reportedly pierced his hip during baseball practice may have done a lot of damage and the hospital said he's had to have a number of transfusions.
The FBI recovered a cellphone, computer, and camera from Hodgkinson's van and was examining them for evidence, the statement said.
