Although the Nationalists remain by far the largest Scottish party in Westminster, they lost 21 MPs and nearly 500,000 votes compared to their performance in 2015.
"The Scottish nationalists, losing more than 20 seats, that is very bad news for them and for any ambition Nicola Sturgeon has to call a second referendum", he told AFP.
The result saw 35 seats secured by the SNP, 13 for the Tories, seven for Labour and four for the Liberal Democrats, which meant the SNP lost almost half a million votes compared with 2015, while the Tories won an additional 300,000-plus.
As the United Kingdom risked political deadlock after May's gamble on a snap election left her short of a majority in UK's parliament, election losses by the Scottish National Party (SNP) undermined Sturgeon's bid for a second independence vote.
"It is the policy of both the Conservative Party and the UK Labour Party to respect the Brexit referendum result".
Sturgeon put a positive spin on the losses, arguing her party was still likely to be the third-largest party in parliament, and the returns would still mean a strong showing for the SNP in Westminster.
So far the party has lost more than a dozen seats, with more losses projected, something that only two years ago have been unthinkable.
Yet, if we remain fixated on the constitution and neglect to debate properly the record of the Scottish (and UK) government, why would people vote for anyone except the SNP and, to a lesser extent, the Scottish Conservatives?
The party ended the night with 35 MPs and just under 37% of the vote - a result substantially down on the 50% of the vote they secured in 2015 which gave them 56 MPs.

Speaking on Saturday, Ms Davidson said: 'I want to ensure that we can look again at issues like Brexit which we know we are now going to have to get cross-party support for. May hit back at Sturgeon for her "tunnel vision".
The election results in Scotland have delivered a number of surprises.
But she said the Liberal Democrats, which now have four MPs in Scotland, were still determined to hold a second referendum on Europe.
Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson said yesterday the general election had shown Scots had "had enough of their constant talk of division".
"We will now work with others to do everything we can... to bring an end to the austerity".
The sentiment was also noted by CNN's Nic Robertson. Mr Robertson - who also took over as SNP depute leader in 2016 - has often been lauded for his PMQs performances, earning a reputation as a formidable opponent and potential future leadership contender.
"I have to say the first part of that is to persuade Theresa May that clinging to Downing Street is not a sensible idea".
Pro-Union parties have called on the SNP to take another independence referendum off the table.
The Tories were confident of a revival north of the border after their success in last year's Scottish Parliament elections and leader Ruth Davidson's popular campaign against a second referendum.
