MSNBC reported that Richman also said Robert Mueller, the special counsel leading an investigation into Russian links with the Trump campaign during the 2016 United States presidential elections, has been in touch with the Senate Judiciary Committee to discuss how the panel can get access to the memos.

"No collusion, no obstruction", Trump told a White House press conference in reference to the twin controversies dogging his administration - accusations his aides colluded with the Russian effort to tilt the vote, and that he sought to block a probe related to the matter.

Trump's private attorney, Marc Kasowitz, seized on Comey's admission that he had orchestrated the public release of the information.

"Some of the things that he said just weren't true", added the president who, when asked if he would be willing to speak under oath to special prosecutor Robert Mueller about his version of the encounters, Trump responded: "100 percent".

"I would be fine with issuing a subpoena, but that most likely would come from the special counsel's office", Collins told CNN. Mueller is also looking into whether anyone in the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

The Republican president took to twitter earlier in the day, claiming "total and complete vindication".

And, as several legal experts have noted, it wasn't illegal for Comey to leak it.

Back in May, shortly after firing Comey, Trump tweeted a warning to Comey not to leak anything negative about him and that he "better hope" that there are no secret "tapes" of their conversations. Asked about the possibility of such tapes, Trump told reporters on Friday, "Well, I'll tell you about that maybe sometime in the very near future".

Comey said a decision was made not report to Sessions a February 14 White House meeting where Trump pressed the director to drop the FBI's inquiry into Flynn, whom Trump fired for withholding information about his contacts with foreign governments.

Leaders of the House Intelligence Committee, which is also investigating suspected Russian election meddling, have written White House counsel Don McGahn asking whether tapes exist and, if so, that they be produced to the committee by June 23.
