The London Bridge attackers wore fake suicide belts to create "maximum fear" as they carried out their rampage, police said Sunday.
Using these knives they stabbed five people to death, and injured many more including an unarmed police officer during an eight-minute rampage that began with their using a hired van to drive into pedestrians on London Bridge.
Haydon said in a statement, "I have not seen this tactic in the United Kingdom before where terrorists create maximum fear by strapping fake explosives to themselves". Each had three disposable water bottles covered in masking tape attached to the belt.
"I have not seen this tactic in the United Kingdom before, where terrorists create maximum fear by strapping fake explosives to themselves. Anyone who saw them on the night would have thought they were genuine", said Commander Dean Haydon. Haydon added that the fact the suicide belts looked real makes the bravery of the officers and members of the public who tried to tackle the terrorists all the more remarkable. As the three set upon one young male passerby armed police arrived and shot them dead, firing a total of 46 shots.
As investigators uncover more information relating to the attacks, it is becoming clear that the three terrorists, Khuram Butt, Youssef Zaghba and Rachid Redouane had been planning a much larger assault.

British police said Saturday that Butt, the ringleader, tried to rent a 7.5-ton truck online on the morning of June 3, but did not provide payment details when prompted. If I charged at them, maybe I could take out one or two.
Inside the van, police found two blowtorches as well as what appeared to be 13 Molotov cocktails made from wine bottles and a possible flammable liquid. "There is a possibility that they could have come back", Haydon said. They had used an east London safe house to cut a piece of leather they attached to the handle, and then each attacker tied it on to his wrist, police have said.
Haydon acknowledged that Butt had links to al Muhajiroun, a banned group headed by cleric Anjem Choudary.
Butt was also arrested for fraud last October but was about to be told by prosecutors he would face no further action.
Asked if the Metropolitan Police needed more resources, Dick said: "We will want more resources to help us and I am sure the same will be being said in the intelligence agencies".
