South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that the missile was sacked early Sunday morning from near Kusong, in North Phyongan province.
North Korea launched a projectile early Sunday from near Kusong, close to the country's west coast, the South Korean military said.
It added that the new launch should serve as a call for stronger sanctions against North Korea.
Japanese officials, however, said the missile flew for about 30 minutes, traveling about 800 kilometers (500 miles) and reaching an altitude of 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles) - a flight pattern that could indicate a new type of missile.
In a statement issued Saturday night, the White House press secretary points out that the missile landed closer to Russian Federation than to Japan.
"We strongly protest against North Korea", he said.

Moon, a liberal who favors a softer approach to the North than his conservative predecessors, strongly condemned the launch during an emergency national security meeting, calling it a clear violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions and a serious challenge to worldwide peace and security, according to senior presidential secretary Yoon Young-chan.
Moon, unlike his conservative predecessors, advocates reconciliation with Pyongyang but warned Sunday that dialogue would be possible "only if the North changes its behaviour".
Multiple sets of United Nations and U.S. sanctions against North Korea have done little to deter it from pursuing its nuclear and missile ambitions.
North Korea and Japan condemned the launch shortly after it was carried out.

China, the isolated North's sole major ally and economic lifeline, has been reluctant to upset the status quo in Pyongyang and risk an influx of refugees from its neighbour.
North Korea needs tests to ideal its missile program, but it also is thought to stage its launches after the elections of new USA and South Korean presidents in an attempt to gauge a new administration's reaction.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe condemned the launch in a quick doorstep interview with reporters.
