A day earlier there were news reports that quoted official sources saying that during a meeting Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had told Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Bajwa about Jindal's visit to Pakistan.

Jindal, who reportedly played a key role in facilitating an "hour-long secret meeting" between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sharif on the sidelines of the Saarc Summit in Nepal in 2014, met the Pakistani premier in the resort of Murree on April 26.

The report also stated that COAS Bajwa also took his officials into confidence over the matter.

Urdu quoted government sources as saying that Sharif had, during a recent meeting, taken army chief Gen Qamar Bajwa into confidence regarding his discussions with Jindal.

Trump's initial letter gave the impression that he was acting on a recommendation from the Justice Department and that Mr. Comey before soliciting and receiving any recommendations and that the Clinton emails were not his motivation.

The Pakistan foreign office had then adopted silence over it while Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif had tweeted to say that his father and Mr. Jindal were old friends and the meeting should not be blown out of proportion. And Jindal had the backing of some important Indian officials for the meeting to defuse ongoing tension between the two countries, the report said. The meeting sparked speculation with several politicians and analysts suggesting it was aimed at a possible Sharif-Modi meeting in the near future.

"However, the only detail of the meeting he shared with his aides was that Jindal was making efforts to defuse tension between India and Pakistan". Sartaj Aziz, Sharif's adviser on foreign affairs, told reporters on Wednesday Pakistan will look into the possibility of such a meeting if India shows interest.

In Pakistan, former cricketer Imran Khan's Tehreek-i-Insaf party expressed concern over the secret meeting. It had also alleged that Jindal conveyed Modi's "message" to Sharif on the death penalty to Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav on spying charges.

The meeting had created a ripple in Pakistan's politics with Nawaz Sharif's political opposition raising fingers over the visit at a time when relations between two nations were low historically.
