A combination photo shows former U.S. FBI Director James Comey testifies over investigation into Hillary Clinton's email system, on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. on July 7, 2016, and U.S. President Donald Trump nominates Judge Neil Gorsuch as the new justice for the Supreme Court in Washington D.C., the United States, on January 31, 2017.

Trump and Pirro made headlines in March when the president urged followers on Twitter to tune into Pirro's March 25 show. Particularly eyebrow-raising was Trump's assertion that he had received three separate assurances from the FBI director that he is not now under investigation by the bureau. "I was thinking about it during this period of time", he said. But the president, in an interview with NBC News, recalled the three occasions, once over dinner and twice over the phone, in which he asked Comey if he was under investigation, to which the FBI director, according to Trump's retelling, said he was not.

Acting FBI director Andrew McCabe also interviewed for the permanent post despite his repeated willingness to break from White House explanations of Mr Comey's sacking and its characterisations of the Russian Federation investigation.

"Here's the thing, the difference between me and another president", he said.

Officials first said Comey had been dismissed over his handling of the investigation into Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's use of private email while at the State Department. He said that while he received a scathing assessment of Comey's performance from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Monday, that memo was not a catalyst for his dramatic decision as the White House had said earlier.

In the aftermath of Comey's dismissal, Cornyn said Trump was "within his authority" to fire him and said it would not affect the investigation of possible Russian ties to Trump's presidential campaign.

The series of tweets come as the White House scrambles to deny that it intentionally misled Americans over the series of events that led to Comey's termination on Tuesday.

Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown spoke about the Comey fallout to David Axelrod in a special conversation on "The Axe Files", airing Saturday at 9 p.m. ET on CNN.

Trump confidants say Mr Bannon has been marginalised on major decisions, including Mr Comey's firing, after clashing with Jared Kushner.

But then Trump went on to argue that his administration's press briefings get high ratings and that networks would "start to cry" if he canceled them.

It's not clear yet whether Trump has any recordings of the conversation that took place.

The 49-year-old McCabe, a career FBI agent, has taken part in a number of high-profile investigations, including probes into the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 and the attacks against U.S. installations in Benghazi, Libya in 2012.

Only one other Federal Bureau of Investigation director, William Sessions, has been fired, with President Bill Clinton citing "serious questions" about Sessions' conduct and leadership.

It occurs sometimes in business meetings or phone calls, and sometimes recordings resurface as transcripts in court, said Stephen Meister, a NY real estate attorney who has represented Mr. Trump in the past and said he had no knowledge of Mr. Trump recording phone calls.
