Trump fired FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday, setting off a wave of backlash that has included Democratic calls for a special prosecutor.
Trump also trolled the White House press corps by tweeting that he might cancel "all future" daily press briefings after his press secretary and his top deputy - as well as Vice President Mike Pence - spent 48 hours explaining his decision to fire Comey in ways that the president himself on Thursday made clear were not accurate. Sessions, who on May 9 formally recommended that Trump fire Comey for his conduct, told Fox News in November 2016: "FBI Director Comey did the right thing when he found new evidence". It hasn't recovered from that.
April 12, 2017 - Speaking to U.S. network Fox, Trump says "it's not too late" to fire Comey. "Regardless of recommendation I was going to fire Comey".
At first, the administration said that Rosenstein "made the recommendation, the president made a swift and decisive action and let Comey go".
"He said, 'You are not under investigation, '" Trump recounted, repeating an assertion made when the White House announced Comey's firing Tuesday.
Many Republicans - from White House staffers to members of Congress to conservative pundits - have been insisting for two days now, despite widespread reports, that President Donald Trump's firing of FBI director James Comey had nothing to do with Comey's investigation into Russian interference with the 2016 election.
The White House also changed its narrative about whether the president had chose to fire Comey based on the recommendations by Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
As it kept shifting explanations for how and why Comey was sacked, the White House at one point cited a memo written by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, which laid out the argument against Comey without calling for his dismissal. "He (Comey) is the wrong man for that position", Mr. Trump said in response to a question. There's no good time to do it, by the way.
