UN peacekeepers' child sex ring left victims, but no arrests

The sexual abuse was just as alarming - involving, in fact, more than 150 allegations. More than 300 of these cases involved the sexual abuse of children, and the peacekeepers rarely, if ever, were punished for their actions.

But they also leave under a cloud.

Haitian lawyer Mario Joseph has been trying to get compensation for victims of a deadly cholera strain linked to Nepalese peacekeepers that killed an estimated 10,000 people.

The Associated Press published a report on Wednesday detailing almost 2,000 allegations of sexual assault and misconduct among United Nations peacekeeping forces over the past.

The withdrawal of United Nations peacekeepers from Haiti over the next six months marks a milestone in the country's progress toward political stability but challenges remain for security and the independence of police. However, PhoneArena spoke to an industry analyst who suggested Samsung rushed production to meet demand and this is the negative result.

Today, the UN Security Council voted to end the MINUSTAH peacekeeping mission after a 13-year presence in Haiti.

Haley raised the thorny topic of allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation by United Nations peacekeepers. "Did these peacekeepers keep them safe?" she asked.

Nine children in the Haiti sex ring - some as young as 12 - told United Nations investigators how Sri Lankan peacekeepers offered them snacks or money for sex.

The council said in its unanimously agreed resolution that the transition recognizes "the major milestone towards stabilization achieved" with the peaceful transfer of power in elections held in February.

But it also recognizes the need for worldwide support to strengthen, professionalize and reform the police — and to help the country promote economic development and face the "significant humanitarian challenges" following Hurricane Matthew which struck last October.

It would also authorize the new mission "to protect civilians under imminent threat of physical violence" in areas where it's deployed and "to use all necessary means" to carry out its mandate in supporting and training Haiti's police.

The council's decision was met with conflicting emotions in Haiti, where many fear that dark days of instability will return after the foreign soldiers depart.
