JHR Developments has confirmed British Formula 4 racer Billy Monger lost both of his legs as a result of the crash during Sunday's race at Donington Park.

The 17-year-old, who smashed at speed into the back of another auto that had halted on the track, was trapped in the wreckage for more than 90 minutes before being extricated and flown to hospital.

UPDATE (2:05 p.m. ET): The British Formula 4 Championship issued a statement revealing Monger was put in a medically induced coma after his amputations, and is expected to be woken up in the coming days.

Monger was competing in the sixth race of the F4 season when he crashed into a seemingly stationary vehicle at full speed.

Doctors were forced to amputate the lower halves of both Monger's legs, as attempts to save the limbs were unsuccessful, Motorsport.com reports.

It added: "The medical team there are pleased that all Billy's vital signs are showing progress and going in the right direction".

Trump's order targets H-1B programme
The Senate Judiciary Committee during the last Congress held a hearing exploring H-1B abuse and its impact on American workers. Trump will sign the order, dubbed Buy American, Hire American , at the headquarters of tool manufacturer Snap-on Inc.

"Billy's family would like to express their gratitude for the first-class medical attention given by Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham and take this opportunity to thank the medical teams, marshals, extrication crews and air ambulance staff for their skilled response and hard work. These messages help give the great strength needed for the recovery process that lies ahead".

Hamilton and the rest of the motorsport world were quick to rally round the teenager, and the £260,000 target was surpassed mere hours after the campaign was launched to help Monger and has family with his treatment.

Billy, who calls himself "Billy the Whizz" on Twitter, had earlier spoken of his desire to become a racing champion.

"Having always been a fighter Billy has already overcome big hurdles in his career", the family said on the fundraising website.

Formula 4 has replaced the British Formula Ford Championship as a testing ground for young drivers, offering a relatively cheap route into professional driving for ambitious young go-karters.
