Fugitive Mexican politician wanted on organised crime charges held in Guatemala

Javier Duarte is being investigated for corruption and is linked to real estate holdings in the USA, including in Scottsdale. Another PRI governor from the class of 2010 wanted on corruption charges, Cesar Duarte of Chihuahua, no relation, is considered a fugitive and believed to be living in El Paso, Texas.

After being detained for one of the biggest corruption scandals in Mexico, former governor of the state of Veracruz, Javier Duarte, is now awaitig extradition after more than five months being a fugitive.

Speaking a year ago after he was accused of having links to phantom businesses that had successfully bid for state contracts, Duarte denied the accusations against him.

Duarte, who has denied any wrongdoing, faces prosecution for embezzlement and organized crime in Mexico and his successor as governor, Miguel Angel Yunes, has accused him of siphoning off billions of pesos from the oil-rich state of Veracruz. Investigators linked Duarte to multiple properties in the United States, including a $600,000 condominium in Scottsdale. And at least 16 journalists were killed during Duarte's term alone, Olvera said.

Critics of Pena Nieto say Duarte's arrest was meant to shore up support for the PRI ahead of a crucial state election in June and the presidential elections next year.

Duarte, 43, was arrested in a hotel lobby in Panajachel, 80 miles west of Guatemala's capital, the national police said in a statement.

During his six-year tenure as governor, Duarte was widely criticized for the violence which rampant in the state.

Duarte, who became governor in 2010, resigned previous year before the end of his term and then went on the run. And The Wall Street Journal, citing orders issued by state police, says that Yarrington had been assigned eight law enforcement officers as bodyguards as late as previous year.

Duarte's wife, Karime Macías, does not have a warrant out for her arrest, and no member of Duarte's family is under investigation either, one Mexican official said.

Duarte stood down past year in order to face the allegations against him, he said, after it was claimed that the Mexican government had found millions of dollars linked to him. And former PRI Gov. Tomas Yarrington of Tamaulipas state was arrested in Italy on April 9. He is not related to Javier Duarte.

Lorenzo Meyer, a political scientist and historian at Mexico's National Autonomous University said Duarte's capture would likely serve as a boost for the Mexican president, whose popularity has fallen dramatically over the past couple years.
