Canada, the United States and Mexico have launched their bid to co-host the 2026 World Cup. Usually, the host country is automatically included in the field, and the USA and Mexico tend to qualify without help.

Gulati attempted to deflect questions about a tournament involving the USA and Mexico amid President Trump's harsh words toward America's southern neighbor, saying that Trump had given his backing to the proposal and was "especially pleased that Mexico was a part of this bid".

It will also no doubt make the case that a joint bid allows for more resources to host the expanded tournament. The success of that World Cup spawned the birth of Major League Soccer, which has grown to 22 teams two decades later.

The 2026 World Cup will be the first to feature 48 teams and 80 games.

"The stadium is a great facility and has been upgraded extensively just a couple of years ago to support the Federation Internationale de Football Association women's program so FIFA's already signed off on our stadium recently and from all of the conversations I've had really like the venue and appreciated the way Edmonton hosts". It later confirmed that the previous two World Cup hosts, Europe and Asia, will not be eligible to bid. Brazil spent more than $11 billion to host the event in 2014, and Russian Federation is on pace to spend about $20 billion for 2018.

The bidding process is expected to begin later this year and to run until 2020. The first consists of a strategy and consultation phase which will end next month. The third phase, lasting from January 2019 through February 2020 will be a bid evaluation. The expansion will begin after the World Cups in Russian Federation and Qatar.

"The United States, Mexico and Canada have individually demonstrated their exceptional abilities to host world-class events", added Gulati. As a consolation, Mexico wants the opener at its 87,000-capacity Azteca Stadium if it becomes the first three-time World Cup host.

Gulati was understandably not keen to get into a discussion on politics, but he revealed the bid had the full support of President Donald Trump, who was said to be particularly happy about Mexico's involvement. He is especially pleased that Mexico is part of this bid...

“We have very specifically addressed this with the president, ” Gulati said of the Trump controversies. However, the European Championship has been hosted by multiple countries at the same time on a handful of occasions.

Mexico has hosted the tournament twice - in 1970 and 1986, while Canada hosted the women's World Cup in 2015.

"The U.S. was at the same point we are now 20 years ago in terms of changing the game into a real professional entity".
