United States official makes brief appearance at G7 environment summit

German magazine Der Spiegel on Saturday said Trudeau had made his comments in a call with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who next month will host a G20 summit.

Mr. Trump announced earlier this month that the US will bow out of the global effort to avert the worst impacts of climate change, saying the Paris agreement would create job losses in the American coal, oil and natural gas industries, and in the manufacturing sector. She said Canada remains "deeply disappointed" in the USA move to abandon the accord, and that it was "very sad" to see the Americans reduced "to a footnote on climate actions". A source familiar with the matter said Trudeau had last month strongly urged the president to stay in the pact.

While this shows that the U.S.is not interested in leading the fight against climate change, it also allows other countries to take over the country's leadership role in this effort.

His absence was noticed by the other G7 members, which are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Supporters of the Paris accord have called Trump's move a blow to worldwide efforts to tackle dangers for the planet posed by global warming.

But Kaine, a Virginia Democrat , said there was no decision within the campaign to use the word "matter" opposed to investigation. He said he decided he had to "protect the credibility of the investigation".

The head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Scott Pruitt, only attended the first day of the meeting on Sunday, held as an early summer heatwave settled over Italy, before flying back to Washington.

The Paris agreement was signed by 195 nations in December 2015 to outline what the world needs to do to limit the increase in temperature of the planet to less than two degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times.

"And, this accord and the objectives that were agreed upon in Paris - and here there is no shadow of a doubt - are irreversible". "I also reiterated our commitment to work with provinces as well as states, cities, businesses and all actors committed to building on ambitious climate action under the Paris agreement".

"We will not let climate policy, or indeed worldwide policy, (be) dictated by any country", Trudeau told legislators.

Since the Trump announcement on June 1, many states, including California and NY, and large numbers of us cities have said they intend to continue to enact policies aimed at reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. In a footnote to the communique, the United States said it wouldn't join with the other six countries in reaffirming their Paris commitments, but said it was taking action on its own to reduce its carbon footprint.
