The number of first-time filers for unemployment benefits continued to decline last week, the Department of Labor reported Thursday.
The Labor Department said Thursday weekly jobless claims fell by 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 234,000 for the week ending April 8, beating the median forecast.
Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected 245,000 new claims last week. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 234,000 to 235,000.
Weekly claims data can be volatile.

A report released by the Labor Department last Friday showed employment in the US rose by much less than anticipated in the month of March.
The unemployment rate fell in March to 4.5 percent, following months of strong job creation, and the Federal Reserve has raised its benchmark interest rate twice since December, citing improving labor conditions, and to ward off an acceleration of inflation, which has been tame so far. "Nonetheless, the low level of claims in a significantly larger labor market, and the persistence of a remarkably low level of claims is still a testament to the strength of the labor market".
Over the past year, the number of people collecting unemployment benefits has fallen 6.9 percent to 2 million.
